Department 01

Piggery Production

The piggery production is focused on producing fattened growers (porkers/baconers) that on regular intervals are taken to the abattoir depending on their readiness. On average at least 10 animal slaughter monthly.

The business is managed in such a way that when a certain number of slaughter animals are taken to the abattoir, an equivalent number of pig growers comes in to replace those taken out to maintain the facility full to capacity. Our vision for pig production is to grow and produce at least 20 growers to the abattoir weekly.

Vegetable farming at Setlhare Farm

Department 02

Vegetable Production

Our fresh vegetable produce is sold at PickNPay Westonaira, Joburg Fresh Produce Market, and Vereeniging Fresh Produce Market. We work on the agreeable price per order for vegetables and are expected to sell/deliver at the agreed price per ton on the contract with Regional Supply Group at the Joburg Market.

Plans to upscale production to 10 hectares of beetroot and carrot. Manure from the piggery department is recycled into vegetable production sites, reducing external input costs and enabling circular agriculture.

Agro-Processing —
The Value Chain

"Agro-processing means transforming products that originate from agriculture, forestry and fisheries into finished and value-added products."

— FAO (1997)

Under this farming method, very small pieces of land are used to produce higher volume agricultural products. The Gauteng Provincial Government supports agro-processing because it creates socioeconomic benefits for emerging small-scale farmers — food security, job creation, entrepreneurial skills development, and increases Gauteng's potential to become South Africa's agricultural powerhouse.

Our target: canned pickled beet for export to global markets. Small and medium enterprises contribute a higher relative employment share than large enterprises — agro-processing is our vehicle for sustainable job creation.

Getting processed vegetables onto the shelves of local food chain shops is a near-term milestone, creating a pipeline toward export readiness. A food safety compliant agro-processing facility is a core infrastructure goal.
